Stop Sugar Addiction
Sugar works similarly to a drug. It enters the blood quickly and causes a blood sugar rise, which releases dopamine (the feel-good hormone). Since your brain seeks dopamine, you crave sugar. It can feel like a hopeless loop, wanting to eat less sugar, but you feel like eating it, and it is EVERYWHERE, so you “cave” and indulge, feeling like a relapse. One thing I see clients do that keeps them in this cycle is feeling like they must be perfect. Repeating the cycle of starting new, then messing up, then promising yourself you will be perfect tomorrow. The best first step is actually not cutting out sugar, but focusing on what your body needs. Plan a list of foods you want to eat and why (ex. I want to eat a hard-boiled egg for protein and an apple for fiber and vitamins today). Focus on getting the GOOD IN more than getting the bad out.
It doesn’t work to hate yourself into getting through sugar addiction. Nurture yourself. The key is to have small sustainable changes. And you can stop the sugar cycle.
